SUN DAMAGE
What is Sun Damage?
Sun damage occurs when the skin is overexposed to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun, causing a variety of skin issues, from premature ageing to more serious conditions like skin cancer. Over time, UV exposure leads to the breakdown of collagen and elastin fibres, causing wrinkles, fine lines, sunspots, and an uneven skin tone. It’s important to address sun damage early to restore skin health and reduce the risk of long-term damage.
How Common is Sun Damage?
Sun damage is extremely common, especially in sunny climates like Australia. Around 1 in 3 Australians will be diagnosed with some form of skin cancer in their lifetime, making it one of the most prevalent health concerns. Additionally, 70-80% of visible signs of skin ageing are attributed to sun exposure, showing just how significant the impact of the sun can be on skin health.
What Causes Sun Damage?
Sun damage is primarily caused by two types of UV radiation:
- UVA Rays: These rays penetrate deeper into the skin and are primarily responsible for premature ageing, wrinkles, and sunspots. They can damage the skin even on cloudy days and are a major contributor to the breakdown of collagen.
- UVB Rays: These rays are responsible for sunburn and can cause direct DNA damage to skin cells, increasing the risk of skin cancer and premature skin ageing.
Excessive sun exposure, especially without adequate sun protection, can result in:
- Hyperpigmentation: Dark spots and freckles that develop due to increased melanin production in response to UV exposure.
- Wrinkles and Fine Lines: UV rays damage collagen and elastin, leading to the formation of wrinkles and sagging skin.
- Sunburn: Acute overexposure to UVB rays causes red, inflamed, and sometimes blistered skin.
- Skin Cancer: Prolonged and unprotected sun exposure is the leading cause of skin cancers such as melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma.
